Black Days Down-Beyond The Threshold
Black Days Down are breaking beyond the threshold in the Minneapolis music scene with their unique and dynamic musical stylings from their latest release, “Beyond The Threshold.” Though this four piece rock band is centered out of the Minneapolis area, the band members hail from New Jersey, Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan. Black Days Down is rounded out by Brad (vocals), Andy (guitars), Kyle (bass), and Matt (drums) who each bring something special to the table and create a sound that is crafty and spectacular.

“Beyond The Threshold”, is a testament to the band’s pursuit to write songs that are outside the realm of normality. They display a unique style of playing and writing that is not heard in the conventional mainstream of music that we, the listeners, are so used to hearing. The band uses an assortment of complex song arrangements, unique breakdowns, and changing time signatures that make for a compelling array of hard driven songs. Opening the album is the song, “Distant Measures.” Apparently the band wanted to start the album with a bang. The song packs a punch with heavy guitars and larger than life vocals. Mission accomplished guys! Another powerful track called, “Suits”, showcases the band’s grungier side with an intro that is fast and catchy. Brad’s vocal work is top-notch because he is able transition from humble intonations to menacing screams. Progressing further into the album, “Rank and File,” hauntingly captures the bands sound and their creative use of different tones. Andy is truly creative with his use of rich acoustics, heavy guitar tones, and integrated guitar riffs that make this song truly captivating. Closing the album is the song, “Maybe.” This song is particularly interesting because of Andy’s use of eery pedal effects. Not to be excluded, Brad delivers a powerful performance with the use of his very skilful screaming and lyrical content. The band also showcases their more comical side with a hidden track after the song, “Maybe”, that is nothing but pure hilarity. I even found myself replaying this hidden track to make sure what I heard was actual real. Even with a serious band name this band knows how to end a cd on a lighter note.
Black Days Down are showing fans that they are going beyond the norm with their unique style of dynamic songs. Energetic and driven, “Beyond The Threshold”, displays the talents and will of four unique individuals and their pursuit in making great songs while having originality that is sorely missed in music today. Breaking beyond the threshold in the music scene is not something the band had to do…it’s something they were destined to do!
