The Material-What We Are

Energy and drive are two things that are seen with many lives bands today. But sometimes it’s hard to find a band that represent the integrity and dedication of their sound on and off stage. This is not the case for The Material, a five piece female-fronted rock band from Los Angeles, CA who presents a positive message to those who are reaching for their dreams. The band wants to be a good role model for their fans by working hard to create amazing music that inspires those searching for hope. Since the release of their full length album, What We Are, the band has been touring nonstop with such bands as The Secret Handshake, There For Tomorrow, and Every Avenue. The Material has even been praised for their energetic and positive performances in notable magazines like Beatweek Magazine, Black Velvet Magazine, and Substream Music Press.

Before listening to, “What We Are”, I expected to compare this band to other high profile female-fronted bands. But to my surprise, I was rather taken aback by the band’s ability to craft inspirational songs with great production quality. The album is kicked off with the songs, “Appearances” and”Stay Here Forever”, which introduces the world to Colleen D’Agostino’s angelic voice. In a business saturated with female vocalists, D’Agostino is a diamond in the rough. Her vocal performance on this album has the potential to make her one of the best in the industry.

“A World Outside” promotes a positive message to their listeners and the world. D’Agostino should not only be given credit for such an amazing voice, but she should also receive credit for crafting such inspirational lyrics. For example, “Don’t give up…There’s so much that you should be seeing you wouldn’t believe it.I know you’ve had enough, but there’s a world outside that’s been waiting.Life’s what you make it so don’t throw it away.” Furthermore, the song “I’d Be Lying” once again displays D’Agostino’s talents as a vocalist with an excellent octave range that will leave the listener hitting the repeat button for more.

Even though D’Agostino is the voice of the band, any listener will hear the dynamic abilities that each band member contributes to give The Material a sonic sound. This is the case with “I’m Alive”. Bassists Jordan Meckley makes this song truly come alive with a funky bass riff that prepares the listener for what is to come with the remainder of the song. Guitarists Jon Moreaux and Roi Elam also work well as a duo,   providing diverse guitar playing and the ability to helm multiple guitar effects. D’Agostino once again displays her talents as an excellent lyrics as she sings, “I’m alive, look inside, there’s a heart that is beating. Tell me what that means to you. I am real, and I can feel every word that cuts through me. Must I bleed to prove to you that I’m alive?”

After listening to “What We Are” any assumptions of The Material being “just another band” is clearly inaccurate. Yes, this band has a collection of great songs, but it’s the honesty and heart that this band presents in their music that is truly memorable. The Material has clearly showed what they are about through their efforts as band — inspiring hope when times are dark. If you’re looking for music with a positive message and vibe, be sure to check out The Material!
